Back-to-school checkups a breeze for cat staff

Can you believe it is almost time for school to start? That means it’s time for a back-to-school visit to the doctor for the School for the Blind Library Cat staff, which requires making a trip to Pinnacle Valley Animal Hospital to see their vet, Dr. Cole Bierbaum.

Wouldn’t you know that we would end up picking the hottest week of the year for our trip — or rather trips. Getting all these guys checked out is way too much for one visit, so we did it Noah’s Ark style — two-by-two. Barney and Tank went the first day and Shadow and Hexie the second.

Dress was casual — it was way too hot for bandanas, and only Shadow and Tank wore collars. We seem to have had an epidemic of lost-collar-disease this summer, but that is a whole ‘nother story. Read the rest of this entry →

Library cats compare notes with LR shop cat Oliver

Barney and Shadow and I have found our new favorite place to shop: Eggshells on Kavanaugh in the
Heights! It is a wonderful store full of neat cooking items: pots and pans, small appliances, knives and all kinds of cooking utensils as well as kitchen towels and oven mitts, just for starters.

To top it off, Eggshells is the home of Oliver, a huge, beautiful black-and-white cat who works as the shop cat.

Oliver was rescued from a shelter in Batesville, and we have it on good authority that his nickname is Handsome, for obvious reasons. This is our kind of place to shop! Read the rest of this entry →

Fitness goes furry as cats try paws at aerobics

It probably won’t surprise anyone for me to tell you that that when I work out I like to be surrounded by other people who love animals in general and cats in particular. For years I have worked out at Susan Brown’s Jazz Movement at the Calvary Family Center in Pulaski Heights.

I’ve so often said to Barney and Shadow and the rest of the library cat staff while rushing out the door, “See you later, guys, I’m going to class” that I thought it would be fun to show them where I go and what happens there.

Barn and Shadow are getting pretty used to our field trips now, and both were handy when I pulled out their new fatigue-print bandanas for the occasion. Read the rest of this entry →
