New year promises full library cat staff

Shadow has really picked up speed in his campaign to be Head Library Cat! On his last visit of the year, besides going to the 6th-grade classroom to pose for graduation pictures, he pretty well did everything he could to demonstrate his versatility.

Never having been to the 6th-grade classroom before, he remained calm and posed for the picture.

Back in the library, he did what I have seen no library cat do since Big Footsie was a young fella. He ran toward a class of none-too-quiet-or-calm primary students and played with them rather than running away. (more…)

Library cats of old somehow still in the stacks as school ends

Thursday was Tank’s last work day for the year and my 6th graders’ last day in elementary.  What a day!

The day before, Shadow and I had gone to their classroom for a graduation picture. Many of these kids were Big Footsie’s and mine from the time they were kindergarteners.

They are all so excited and look so grown up; I smile at memories of them in their early years at the School for the Blind and it looks very natural to see a black cat in Makayla’s arms. (more…)

The scheduled library cat on duty today was … the one who was nearest me when it was time to leave! That turned out to be Shadow.

For the first time he didn’t make a peep on the way to work and that is great progress.

When I sat down at the computer he joined me and immediately knocked two pictures over and down the book return, pushed the stapler to the floor and walked across the keyboard a couple of times, followed by plopping down in the space he had cleared. (more…)
